Those who spend more on the wedding more likely to get divorced

With divorce rates in Texas and across the nation hovering at about 50 percent, there have been many studies searching for reasons why divorces occur. One study found that the amount of money that a couple spends on a wedding could be a risk indicator for whether or not the marriage will end in divorce.

Approximately 3,150 heterosexual individuals who were living in the United States were given a survey about their lifestyle, spending habits and the outcome of their marriage. Ultimately, the study found that couples that spent between $2,000 and $4,000 on the engagement ring were not only more likely to get a divorce, but that the marriage itself would not last as long as others. For men in particular, for example, it was found that those who spent this kind of money on the engagement ring were 1.3 times as likely to get divorced as those who spent between $500 and $2,000.

Likewise, those who spent more on their wedding were also more likely to get divorced earlier than those who spent less. For example, men who spent less than $1,000 on their wedding had half the risk of getting a divorce as those who spent $5,000 to $10,000. When it came to women, those who had a wedding that cost more than $20,000 were 1.6 times more likely to get a divorce.

When former couples have a larger of marital assets or money involved, getting a divorce can be extremely complex. In many cases, a high asset divorce can take months or even a year to resolve, especially if the former couple is not able to work amicably. A family law attorney may represent one person when dividing up property and dealing with custody or spousal support issues. If a resolution cannot be reached through a collaborative divorce, the attorney may take the case to court.
