Mediation and other types of alternative dispute resolution techniques have proved themselves to be effective means of resolving family law problems. Using mediation rather than traditional family law litigation can reduce the stress that comes with divorce. It can also keep legal costs reasonable.

What Is Family Law Mediation?
In family law mediation, the parties to a dispute agree to use the services of a neutral third-party mediator. In one or more sessions, the mediator identifies areas of agreement and disagreement, and tries to guide the parties to a mutually acceptable solution. Each party usually retains the services of an attorney who participates in the mediation session, provides advice and works to protect the party's rights and interests. Mediation can be particularly beneficial resolving child custody and visitation issues, though the technique can be successfully applied to many other types of family law problems.
Matthew J. Hill was trained in the use of mediation at the Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution at The University of Texas School of Law. He has also received training in advanced family law mediation techniques at the A.A. White Dispute Resolution Center at the University of Houston Law Center.
